Shadowlands' Celebrations: Fall Equinox

Fall Equinox is a Celebration we enjoy greatly as a family.  It is within the middle of Fall's harvests and the cooling days.  The Fall Garden is tended to, and any extra items are planted or replanted.  Herbs are cut back and hung to dry.  If weather permits, a fall foraging gathering is done.  We refresh the Fall decorations, inside and outside.  Then the evening's feast is served.

Example of a Fall Equinox Blessing:

"Creator of All, we thank You for this Fall Equinox.  As we gather here this day, may we always give thanks for the cooling days of fall, the warm clothing made by loving hands, and for the roots, dried berries, smoked meats, fall gardens, and evergreen foraging which will sustain us into this coming winter.  As we eat this feast set out before us, may we never forget those who taught us to live here in the wild shadowlands."

Example of Fall Equinox Crafts:

  • Basket Making
  • Weaving
  • Corn Stock and Pumpkin Decor Display
  • Plant Fall Crops (if any are left to plant)
  • Make a Leaf and Pine Cone Wreath

Example of Fall Equinox Food:
  • Roast Chicken
  • Roasted Spinach Greens with Walnuts
  • Dark Rye Bread with Pear Butter
  • Baked Acorn Squash
  • Mulled Cider
  • Pumpkin Turnovers (with yucca flour crust)
Most of these are wild foraged/gathered for us (local pumpkins picked, gifted pears from a neighbor's trees, acorn squash from local farms, spinach greens from our garden, walnuts from the forest).  The chicken was free-range from a local farm.  While we are not 80% local yet, we are still working towards our goal to get close to that by 2030, and local foods take us a long way to that goal.

Then, if the night allows, we head out and roast marshmallows over the firepit with more cider.  There we share stories.   All in all, Fall Equinox is typically a joyful celebration within the fall season.

How do you celebrate Fall on Journey?
