Shadowlands Celebrations: Birthdays

 
Here at Nightstar Cottage, Robby, Luna, Bandit, Cowboy, and I have birthdays scattered throughout the year and the cycles of the seasons.  Robby and Cowboy's fall within the Buck Moon, within the month known as July.  Luna and Bandit, aka "The Twins", have theirs within the  Moon, in the month known as November.  Mine (Morria) falls within the Wolf Moon, within the Month known as January.  Other extended family members have celebrations within the other season cycles. 

It is my hope that the following ideas give ideas for your own rewilded birthday celebrations within the Shadowlands and Wyldwode.


Birthday Blessings:

"Creator of All, we thank You for this Birthday.  As we gather here this day, may (birthday person's name) have a blessed journey this coming year, may the moon always shine upon their journeys, and may bats keep the night bugs away from their Light.  As we eat this feast set out before us, may we honor (birthday person's name) as we  live here in the wild shadowlands."


Birthday Activities:

  • Winter - Snow play, sledding, winter foraging, winter stories
  • Spring - Garden play, seeding plantings, spring foraging, spring stories
  • Summer - Water play, swimming, summer foraging, summer stories
  • Monsoon - Snow play, sledding, monsoon foraging, rain stories
  • Fall - Snow play, sledding, fall stories

Birthday Feasts:

  • Winter - Elk Stew, Hearty Bread, Dried Fruits & Berries, Cocao, Boston Cream Pie 

  • Spring - Salmon Loaf, Carrot-Nettle Soup, Candied Violets, Tea, Strawberry Short Cake

  • Summer - Grilled Fish, Fresh Corn, Cucumber Salad, Berry Shrubs, Chocolate Cake

  • Monsoon - Goat Gyros, , , Greenthread Tea, Ginger Spice Cake

  • Fall - Black Bean Chilli, Rosemary Biscuits, Candied Nuts, Chia Tea, Peanut Butter Cake

A Nature Goth, what is it? Herbal Nook: Healing with Peppermint

Herbal Nook: Herbal Healing

Last month I introduced you to peppermint, but before we dive any deeper into my Herbal Nook, I wanted to tell you the story of how this SW Forest Goth became an herbalist: I grew up in a small town called Haysville, along a creek called the Cowskin.  My mother was a plant lady and was raised as a farm girl.  Having survived cancer before I was adopted, she was always visiting the natural food and plant storse back in the '80s and early '90s, before it was "cool".   When I was 9, I was playing within the dark coolness of my closet, which was my secret fort.  I laid down upon my trusted blanket, and disaster struck.  An eight-legged invader, a silver dollar-sized brown recluse, the dreaded fiddle back, spider had made its way within my blanket.  Soon, I had a giant lump behind my left ear.  It was upon this night, we learned I had something greater to fear than the spider...
